One of our favorite places to sail to in the British Virgin is North Sound, Virgin Gorda. This anchorage is one of the Eastern most points in all of the Caribbean and home to the Bitter End Yacht Club, Saba Rock, Leverick Bay and Byers Creek Resort.Â
Â
North Sound is completely protected from ocean swells- surrounded by islands (Virgin Gorda, Prickly Pear, and Mosquito Island), reefs and mountains, the Sound always has smooth flat water that makes it feel like a lake in the middle of the ocean, even on the windiest nights. There are mooring balls at Leverick Bay, the Bitter End, and Saba rock, and there are several great anchoring spots as well. Â
In addition to the comfortable and beautiful surroundings, there is plenty do on land and in the water. Bitter End Yacht Club rents windsurfers, kiteboards and small sailboats from its beach, with a really friendly staff to assist. Because the water is so flat, watersports like tubing, wakeboarding, and waterskiing from your tender are great in the Sound. Venture out and around the Northeast side of the sound, and you'll come to Eustasia Sound. It offers great snorkeling and swimming. On land you can hike, dine and hang out in a number of great beach bars and restaurants in the area.
Saba Rock is one of our favorite spots--it's a tiny island in the Sound with a great restaurant and gift shop that takes up the majority of the island. There are also several rooms to rent for the evening off your yacht if you wish, and the rest of the island is made up of lawns and gardens. If you grab a Saba Rock mooring ball for the night (at $25) you get free water and one free bag of ice at their dock.

With so many things to do in a safe, comfortable and beautiful environment, it can be easy to spend a few days of your sailing vacation in North Sound, and we highly recommend it!
Enjoy!
